Colin Baylor: What are the apps you use everyday and how do you use them?
Caroline Conena: The big two are Google Maps and The Weather Channel. Google Maps is useful because I’m always driving or walking to scout new performance and special event sites for our company. I save time by not having to ask for directions and it makes navigating the roads much less stressful. The Weather Channel use is self-explanatory and it’s easy to use with a clean interface.
I also use UP by Jawbone. It goes with my UP Bracelet to log fitness activities and track personal trends over time. It’s satisfying to add physical and effort levels. Then there’s Spotify, which I use to make customized music playlists that I can listen to in the car or at the gym.
CB: Is there an app that has surprised you with its usefulness?
CC: Bank apps – I use TD Bank and Bank of America. I use them for personal and work reasons: cashing checks, tracking accounts, viewing account activity, etc. They have excellent responsive design and are as easy to use on my mobile device as on the computer.
CB: Is there an app you think developers should be working on?
CC: Having something like TodayTix for places other than Broadway and London’s West End would be nice to see. TodayTix allows you to find the best priced, last-minute tickets for shows at forty different venues in New York. It’d be great to have something like that available to theater here and in the Boston area. Hopefully they will expand the scope of the app or other developers will create apps that serve different areas similarly.
CB: If you could recommend one app to arts managers, what would it be?
CC: There is a lot of employee paperwork to be processed as a manager. I would recommend W4 and W9 apps. And PDF apps with which you can take a picture of a form and convert it to a PDF. Those are incredibly useful for maintaining records.
